Remote Communication for Traffic Lights
Enhance urban efficiency with Remote Communication for Traffic Lights: real-time monitoring and control for traffic optimization.

Challenge
Modernize network infrastructure and enable remote communication with traffic lights at various points in Rio de Janeiro.
Solution
Cellular routers and Bridgemanager system for managing connections with the client's supervisory system.
Our client had a worn-out and obsolete RS485 serial network infrastructure with high maintenance costs. They needed a robust and reliable remote communication solution capable of controlling hundreds of traffic lights in specific areas of Rio de Janeiro. The application was critical because, as in any large metropolis, the city could descend into chaos if communication with the controllers failed.
Above-Net provided the solution using rugged, industrial cellular routers coupled with the Bridgemanager system, responsible for monitoring and managing connections. This solution enabled transparent communication via Internet/VPN between the CCO and the traffic light controllers, and generated important data for the client regarding connection status, data traffic, and signal strength.
The products and systems involved in the solution are industrial-grade and designed for critical operations and high-volume connections
- Robustel R3000-L3P – Dual-SIM cellular router with 1 serial port and 1 Ethernet port;
- M1000XP – Cellular Modem with Serial Port;
- Bridgemanager – A system for managing and monitoring cellular connections. Hosted in a redundant data center, it ensures reliability and robustness for large volumes of connections. In addition to enabling a transparent link between the supervisory system and equipment deployed in the field, it generates data and information on signal level, location, connection status, and more.
This solution has been in operation for some time and has been replicated by the client in other cities due to its reliability, high availability, and excellent cost-benefit ratio.
