Wastewater Treatment Plant Monitoring Case Study

Wastewater treatment plants using bioreactor membrane technology require continuous monitoring of their operating parameters. The Bridgemeter  has enabled a significant increase in production and efficiency.

DECENTRALIZED OPERATING MODEL

  • MBR treatment plants require constant management due to the nature of the membrane fouling process
  • Decentralized operation with significant distances
  • One operator is required per station in operation
  • One monitoring and engineering vehicle for every 3 stations
  • Timely data collection by the engineering team
  • Difficulty visualizing the operation
  • Inconsistency in production level
  • Constant unscheduled stops
  • Production reports for SLA

Solution: Industrial IIoT

Every operation is monitored in real time

The monitoring system records and sends notifications to the responsible operators for the necessary actions and corrections to the cycle. The water meter reading report reflects the daily reduction or increase in treated water productivity.

Using information from the manufacturer, intelligent cross-conditions were created so that the system could interpolate the intersection of various parameters, replacing sensors that are not available on the market. For example, when comparing the pump current measurement and the transmembrane pressure (TMP), the system learns and reports corresponding ranges for: Clean Diaphragm, Partially Fouled Diaphragm, and Fouled Diaphragm. The maximum permissible pressure is also constantly monitored

All PLC parameters are also monitored.

Results

Every operation is monitored in real time

  • Average increase of 30% in production
  • 27% reduction in unscheduled downtime
  • TMP pressure remained constant in 95% of measurements
  • Daily record of wastewater treatment plant production after using the system
  • Reduction of staff and operational infrastructure by 40%
  • Automatic generation of production reports and SLAs
  • Monitoring attendance of the supervision team.

Monitoring provided an unprecedented view of the wastewater treatment plant, since previously there was only a "snapshot" from operator visits. With the Industrial IoT system, it was possible to create a "movie" with live streaming of readings taken during the treatment process, as well as intelligent alarm and notification systems. Particularly in industry, even minimal productivity increases can generate significant improvements in results with very low implementation costs, as in this case study.
