THE PROBLEM
Communication difficulties for large-scale applications
Legacy LP and twisted-pair communications are no longer used or have an exorbitant operating cost. Wireless network communication solutions are impractical due to line-of-sight and distance issues. Satellite communication, in turn, has a very high operating cost.
The standard architecture for cellular data network communication makes it impossible to manage remote connections and equipment without a human presence at the monitored site.
Each time the connection drops, it would be necessary to manually re-establish the IP addressing. Furthermore, security rules and protections from the carriers prevent direct access to the cellular router.
CASE DETAILS
Several technologies were tested by the client, but all presented low robustness or communication instability. The LPs, for example, frequently had their wires stolen and no longer have support from the operators.
Another complicating factor: the multiplexing of serial networks for PLC communication via the cellular network. Above-Net was the only company capable of overcoming this barrier for the client and delivering a reliable, highly available, and cost-effective solution.
The solution consists of a 3G/4G RTU connected to the PLC, which in turn connects to various devices at the workstations. The router remains permanently connected to the Bridgemeter , which is capable of informing the control center's supervisory system of information in MODBUS protocol or the access path of each device connected to the PLC. In this way, the client can remotely monitor and control various devices securely and reliably through a reliable and stable cellular connection.
